Her released the cargo ship “Vezhen”, which was considered suspicious of an underwater fibre optic cable on 26 January 2025, the prosecutorial authority of the Nordic country announced today (03.02.20205). In particular, cutting the underwater cable between Latvia and Sweden caused the immediate reaction of the two countries, with the Swedish authorities saying that it was ultimately denied the possibility of being sabotaged. ADVERSE “The investigation now clearly shows that it was not a corruption case,” the prosecution said in an announcement. “It has been demonstrated that a combination of weather conditions and faulty equipment and navigational errors contributed to the cutting of the cable,” is quoted in the prosecutor’s announcement. Sweden had captured the Bulgarian ship “Vezhen”, as part of an investigation into “distinguished sabotage”. The CEO of the Bulgarian shipping company Navibulgar had refused any offence. CORVERSE The ship, however, caused damage to the cable, according to the prosecution. The investigation shall continue in order to determine whether any other violations were committed in relation to the incident. Concern about sabotage in the Baltic Sea In the early hours of 26 January 2025, a fibre optic cable of the National Radio and Television Centre of Latvia (LVRTC) connecting the Swedish island of Gottland to the city of Latvia Ventspils, was cut. The LVRTC had said preliminary estimates showed “external factors”. In a context of increased surveillance against the threats of “hybrid war”, Norway briefly arrested between Thursday and Friday (30 – 31.01.2020) a Norwegian ship with a Russian crew, considered a suspect in the incident, before leaving it free in the absence of evidence. TT News Agency/Johan Nilsson via REUTERS Many underwater cables have been damaged or cut in recent months in the Baltic Sea. Against repeating such incidents, NATO announced in January the launch of patrol missions aimed at protecting these sensitive underwater infrastructure. Aeroplanes, ships and drones are now developing more massively and more regularly in the Baltic Sea, as part of a new mission called the Baltic Guard.
