Greek supermarkets have reaffirmed their commitment to price stability, according to the Hellenic Supermarket Association (HSA), which issued a clarifying statement following recent government measures aimed at curbing potential price hikes linked to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

A Steady Presence for Greek Households

The HSA — representing 19 major supermarket chains across Greece — emphasized its longstanding support for Greek households, both during normal times and periods of international uncertainty. The association stressed that supermarkets continue to act responsibly, transparently, and with care toward the millions of consumers they serve nationwide.

Proven Resilience and Responsiveness

Citing lessons from recent years, the HSA highlighted the sector’s agility in responding to geopolitical crises and economic pressures. It noted that even without horizontal state-imposed interventions, supermarkets consistently operate with accountability and consumer focus.

Referencing data from the Institute of Economic and Industrial Research (IELKA), the HSA pointed out that supermarket inflation stood at just 1.29% in 2025 — despite the removal of the gross profit margin cap in July of the same year.

Competition and Market Functionality Deliver Real Benefits

“This low figure demonstrates that healthy competition and smooth market operation effectively keep prices in check — delivering immediate, tangible benefits to citizens and consumers,” the statement concluded.

Going forward, the HSA said it will closely monitor developments and remain actively engaged in an open, evidence-based dialogue with the government. Its aim is to support policy interventions that meaningfully strengthen consumer purchasing power and safeguard the real prosperity of Greek society.
