Successful Rescue Operation for a 30-Year-Old Caver Trapped in a 55-Meter Chasm in Lavrio

A major rescue operation unfolded in Lavrio to save a 30-year-old caver who fell into a 55-meter chasm. Firefighters maintained communication with him from the moment they arrived. Despite being injured and in pain, the man was able to move his arms and legs. The members of the Emergency Response Team (EMAK) used specialized ropes to reach the trapped caver at this difficult location in Lavrio and secured him on a special stretcher. Following that, the painstaking process of hoisting the caver back up to the top of the chasm commenced with extraordinary caution. It seems the 30-year-old aimed to reach the point where the chasm ends, a spot of interest for cavers, but at about 10 meters above the ground, it’s estimated that the ‘stop’ mechanism on his descent rope failed, causing him to fall forcefully onto the rocky ground and sustain injuries. Nearby shrubs partially broke his fall, likely saving him from more severe harm. Regardless, the EMAK operation was particularly challenging as rescuers had to ensure no further injury occurred due to existing back wounds. Just the fact that he needed to be lifted from a depth of 55 meters highlighted the complexity of the mission, where every wrong move could have been fatal. An ambulance from EKAB was also on site with paramedics ready to provide first aid and transport the injured caver to the nearest hospital.
