An announcement was made regarding a serious incident that occurred on Monday morning (March 31, 2025), when a train remained immobilized for 30 minutes in the Agioi Anargyroi tunnel due to a power outage. According to Hellenic Train, the power failure across the entire suburban rail network was caused by an unauthorized breach of the Automatic Level Crossing System by a van-type vehicle. This breach resulted in a short circuit and interruption of power supply to trains over a large part of Attica’s railway network. Throughout the incident, the train driver followed standard procedures and continuously informed passengers. The tunnel had lighting and ventilation systems functioning, ensuring passenger safety, while the train was monitored via CCTV cameras from the control center. Backup machinery was promptly dispatched, towing the train to the Agioi Anargyroi station where passengers transferred to another train continuing towards the airport. Hellenic Train noted that disruptions are expected in certain suburban routes between Athens and Piraeus, which will gradually be resolved throughout the day. Railbus services are currently operating on the Athens-Piraeus line, and bus replacements are being used for routes 1308, 1313, 1310, and 1315 of the Piraeus-Kifisia section. Recent emergency drills conducted with relevant authorities contributed significantly to the efficient handling of the situation. Hellenic Train remains committed to safety and immediate passenger updates.
