Greek students and their families can now apply for the student housing allowance, a financial support measure designed to help households lacking the means to cover accommodation costs during studies. Applications opened on 30 June and will remain open until 31 July.
How Much Is the Allowance?
The allowance has been increased across the board: it now stands at €1,500 for eligible students. For those studying at universities outside Athens and Thessaloniki, the amount rises to €2,000. In cases of shared student housing (co-living), the allowance reaches €2,500 per student.
Income Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants’ annual household income must not exceed €40,000. This threshold increases by €3,000 for each dependent child beyond the first.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted electronically via the official platform: https://stegastiko.minedu.gov.gr.
Applicants need to log in using their TAXISnet credentials — the username and password issued by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) for accessing electronic tax services.
Eligibility Requirements
The allowance is available to undergraduate students who are:
- Greek citizens or citizens of other European Union member states;
- In possession of a valid academic ID card;
- Registered taxpayers in Greece with a valid AFM (Tax Identification Number);
- Not subject to age restrictions.
A key condition is that the student must be renting accommodation in a city other than their primary residence — and neither the student nor their parents may hold full ownership or usufruct rights over another property in that city.
Who Submits the Application?
The application must be filed by the person legally responsible for supporting the student — typically a parent or guardian — as defined under Article 11 of Law 4172/2013 (Government Gazette A’ 167).
In cases of divorce or separation, the allowance goes to the parent with whom the student is registered as a dependent.
Exception: The student themselves may apply directly if they meet any one of the following conditions:
- They are orphaned (both parents deceased);
- Both parents reside abroad;
- They are over 25 years old;
- They are required to file an income tax return and are no longer considered a dependent family member.
Further details are available in the official circular outlining the terms for awarding the housing allowance for the 2025–2026 academic year.
