Powerful winds reaching up to 124 km/h swept across Attica from Saturday morning (27.06.2026), triggering serious disruptions—including falling trees and debris. On Michalakopoulou Street in Athens, a massive tree trunk crashed onto a parked car, flattening it while the driver was inside.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and safely extricated the driver, who sustained no injuries. A large-scale operation followed to carefully cut away the enormous trunk, minimizing further damage. Traffic on the street was temporarily halted during the operation.
Wall Collapse Halts Traffic in Pangrati
The most serious incident occurred in Pangrati, where part of a wall collapsed onto Ergotimou Street near a residential building undergoing renovation. The collapse forced authorities to suspend traffic at the intersection with Pratinou Street. According to initial reports from the Hellenic Fire Service, no injuries were reported.
National Wind Records Set
Data from stations operated by the National Observatory of Athens showed the strongest wind gust nationwide was recorded at the Penteli Peak—reaching an extraordinary 124 km/h. Paximada Karystou followed at 111 km/h, then Avlonas on Chios (105 km/h), and Geraki in Laconia (101 km/h) — a meteorological station used for fire-weather monitoring. Other high readings included Lavrio (98 km/h) and Parnitha (92 km/h).
Authorities warn that Sunday (28.06.2026) will bring similarly hazardous conditions across much of Greece—and especially Attica—with extreme fire danger and heightened risk of falling trees and structural debris due to persistent strong winds.
