A powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck at 02:17 local time on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) in the sea area between Rhodes and southwestern Turkey. The quake was felt across all the Dodecanese islands. The epicenter was located 21 kilometers north of Rhodes. So far, no reports of significant material damage or injuries have been made. According to rodiaki.gr, the Fire Department Command Center in Rhodes received no calls for assistance. However, civil protection teams from the Municipality of Rhodes and the South Aegean Region are on heightened alert, with fire trucks conducting checks in various parts of the city. The regional governor of South Aegean, Giorgos Hatzipetros, noted that the tremor was strong, causing many tourists on the island to evacuate their hotels out of fear. The earthquake’s focal depth was recorded at 64.9 kilometers. Besides the Dodecanese, the quake was also felt along the southwestern coasts of Turkey and in Crete. The epicenter is also 17 kilometers south of Marmaris on the Turkish coast opposite Rhodes. Initially, the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens reported the magnitude as 5.7.
