Strike Tomorrow: How Metro, Buses, Trolleybuses, Tram, and Taxis Will Operate – What Applies to Flights and Ferries

The entire country will come to a standstill on Wednesday (01.09.2025), as ADDEDY and GSEE have called for a 24-hour strike involving numerous unions and federations. As a result, drivers of buses, trolleybuses, trams, and metro services are expected to halt operations. According to the decision by the OAAS Employees Union and the ILPAP Workers’ Union, buses and trolleybuses will run regular routes from 09:00 to 21:00. This means they will observe a work stoppage from the start of their shift until 09:00 in the morning and again from 21:00 until the end of their shift. Regarding the metro and tram, employees will also stage a work stoppage. Specifically, according to announcements by STASY employee unions, metro lines 2 and 3, as well as line 1 (the electric railway), will operate from 09:00 in the morning until 17:00 in the afternoon. What about train, flight, ferry, and taxi schedules? The Panhellenic Federation of Railworkers has also decided to join the 24-hour strike, resulting in cancellations or modifications to both train and suburban rail services. Security personnel may operate certain routes. Athens taxi drivers will participate in the strike, as announced by S.A.T.A., along with the Air Traffic Controllers’ Union. If the Air Traffic Controllers’ Union proceeds with the strike (pending judicial decision), only specific flights will be served: flights transiting through Athens FIR; flights carrying heads of state or prime ministers; Hellenic Air Force missions on operational duties or scheduled exercises; aircraft facing unusual or emergency situations; medical evacuation flights; humanitarian aid flights; and search and rescue aircraft operations. The Panhellenic Seafarers’ Federation (PNO) will also join the 24-hour strike, leaving ferries docked at ports. GSEE and ADDEDY are calling for a rally at Klauthmonos Square at 11:00 a.m., while PAME calls for one at 10:30 a.m. at Propylaea. The Piraeus Labour Center invites participants to gather at 10:00 a.m. at Dimotikou Theatrou Square. Key demands include reducing working hours and fully restoring free collective bargaining. What about public transport in Thessaloniki? The OASTH Workers’ Union has decided to participate in the 24-hour strike called by GSEE, as announced by the Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization. During the strike, a limited number of routes will be operated by safety staff. However, services will run normally for specially adapted vehicles providing free transportation for people with disabilities, as well as the night-line N1 service operating between KTEL and the Airport Night Route.
