Storm Hits Northern Greece: Xanthi and Drama Flooded, Rivers Swell

in

Northern Greece is facing severe weather-related disruptions, with widespread flooding in Xanthi and Drama. In Xanthi’s Mikro Tympano area, homes were inundated and roads turned into rivers; the road to Petrochori was temporarily closed due to debris. The Kosynthos River is nearing overflow levels. In Drama, the Kalifytou and Arkadiko Irish bridges are closed. Farmland across the Xanthi plain was submerged, while debris flows, landslides, and flooding affected mountainous and rural roads—including areas near Pomakochoria, Smynthe, Iliopetra, Orfano, Filia, and Kyrnos. A fallen tree near Xanthispi cut off access to Stavroupoli. One resident reported their home flooded for the second time in Xanthi’s Mikro Tympano. Heavy rainfall also caused infrastructure damage.
