Stock Markets: Athens Index Edges Lower Amid Mixed European Trends

Mildly bearish sentiment prevailed at the opening of trading on the Euronext Athens exchange, as prices faced heightened pressure—particularly from the banking sector. However, these pressures eased as the session progressed. Under the weight of early liquidity withdrawals, the Euronext Athens General Index opened in negative territory. Nevertheless, buying interest emerged, acting as a counterbalance to the downward momentum. As a result, losses for the benchmark index remained limited, with the index holding steady above the 2,500-point level.

The banking index recorded the steepest declines, down approximately 1%, while total trading value surpassed €35 million.

Among large-cap stocks, the strongest gains were posted by shares of HELPE, Coca-Cola HBC, EYDAP, and Motor Oil. In contrast, the largest losses were seen in Credia Bank, Elvalhalcor, Alpha Bank, and Optima Bank—down 1.16% each. Across the board, 45 stocks advanced, 52 declined, and 11 remained unchanged.

European Markets Open Higher
