Disturbing new details have emerged in the case of 45-year-old Stavroula Levendaki, whose murder in Chania shocked the entire country. Levendaki had been missing for several days before her body was discovered. Security camera footage from a neighbouring residence — aired by Live News — captures her final moments before she was killed by her 43-year-old North Macedonian tenant, who has already confessed to the crime. Greek police are also reviewing additional video material documenting Levendaki’s last known movements.

Final walk captured on camera

In the footage, Levendaki is seen walking calmly toward the apartment where she would later be murdered. She appears to be carrying items — likely shopping bags. According to journalist Vasilis Lampropoulos, the video disproves earlier witness accounts and even the suspect’s own initial statements about timing and intent. ‘She appears on camera holding nothing, ruling out the possibility that she was returning to Chania at that moment or that it was a different time than claimed by some witnesses — including the perpetrator himself. This is the video that essentially guided the Hellenic Police’s investigation,’ he said.

Chilling forensic detail

Lampropoulos also revealed another harrowing finding: investigators determined the suspect attempted to silence Levendaki by covering her mouth with duct tape — but the tape lacked strong adhesive properties. She managed to remove it repeatedly and cried out for help. After multiple failed attempts to restrain and silence her, the suspect allegedly delivered the fatal blows.

Legal proceedings and motive

On the morning of Tuesday, 23 June 2026, the 43-year-old suspect appeared before a prosecutor and investigating judge — under strict security measures — in connection with an unrelated case involving illegal cannabis cultivation. That hearing occurred before the homicide file was formally completed.

Authorities continue examining all available evidence to determine what led to the killing. A particularly chilling element is the suspect’s recorded conversation with his wife, in which he admitted to having previously maintained a romantic relationship with Levendaki. According to his own account, on 30 May — just days before her disappearance — she visited the apartment he rented to inspect the property. During that visit, a heated argument erupted. He claims she threatened to reveal their affair to his wife.

As Lampropoulos explained, investigators are seriously considering the possibility that the murder was motivated by the suspect’s fear of exposure — and his dependence on his spouse. The couple had been married for many years, and evidence suggests the suspect was heavily reliant on her emotionally and possibly financially. ‘The phrase “I’ll tell your wife” reportedly uttered by Stavroula is believed by authorities to be the trigger for the attack,’ Lampropoulos stated.

Investigators are also examining the state of the suspect’s marriage, though the Greek text cuts off mid-sentence at this point.
