As friends, family, and fellow residents of Varypetro in Chania remain deeply shaken by the brutal murder of 45-year-old Stavroula Levendaki, authorities are working to uncover the motive behind the crime—and the truth behind the suspect’s shifting statements.

Confession and Contradictions

The 43-year-old tenant of Levendaki was arrested and remanded in custody after confessing to her murder. During his interrogation, he maintained his version of events and claimed remorse. He alleged that Levendaki had threatened to expose a past extramarital relationship he’d had with his wife—a claim authorities have questioned from the outset.

Mounting Evidence Points to Financial Motive

However, the extreme violence of the crime, combined with inconsistencies in the suspect’s account and forensic findings, strongly suggest a financial motive. Relatives and friends of Levendaki believe the suspect may have misappropriated money from her—and refused to repay it.

Attempt to Stage the Crime

Investigators uncovered evidence that the suspect attempted to stage the scene and mislead police. He reportedly tried to frame an unknown foreign national by handing over Levendaki’s bank card and PIN—intending for the man to withdraw cash and create the illusion of a robbery.

Forensic Findings Contradict Confession

According to forensic experts—including Dr. Vasilis Lambropoulos—the suspect’s narrative does not hold up under scrutiny:

  • The victim was bound with a zip tie while still alive, not post-mortem as the suspect claimed.
  • No signs of injury from a bottle were found on either the suspect or the victim.
  • The two stab wounds described by the suspect occurred after death—specifically, after the fatal blow delivered with a wooden log.

These findings indicate the suspect deliberately misrepresented the sequence of events—suggesting premeditation and an effort to fabricate a self-defensive or chaotic scenario.

A Pattern of Deception

Authorities now view the suspect’s statements as systematically false. His attempt to implicate Levendaki’s brother earlier in the investigation—and later shift suspicion to an unidentified foreigner—further undermines his credibility. The case increasingly points to financial entanglement as the core motive behind this premeditated, violent act.
