Stavros Georgiou’s mobile phone, security camera footage from 3 September near the apartment building housing his law office in Agios Panteleimonas, Athens, and witness statements from neighbours have become key focuses of the police investigation into the fatal assault that killed the prominent criminal lawyer.
Georgiou was found dead late on the evening of 21 July — discovered by his two minor twin daughters inside his office. Since then, Hellenic Police investigators have been working to reconstruct the sequence of events and uncover all details surrounding his death.
Initial forensic findings indicate no stab or gunshot wounds on the body. Instead, evidence points to an extremely violent beating. Severe cranio-cerebral injuries were sustained through repeated blows — including punches and kicks — and investigators believe his head may also have struck the wooden paneling of a bed located in the office.
Georgiou was found naked, curled in a foetal position, lying in a pool of blood. He reportedly kept the bed in his office for rest during long workdays, sometimes sleeping there overnight. His body was discovered beside it. No signs of forced entry were detected — raising the possibility he knew his attacker and may have let them in voluntarily. However, authorities are not ruling out other scenarios, including robbery. Relatives and close associates have been contacted to determine whether any personal items are missing from the premises.
Based on the initial autopsy report and crime scene examination, investigators are operating under the working hypothesis of homicide — and are now urgently seeking to identify the person or persons responsible.
Georgiou’s mobile phone is among the first pieces of evidence to be examined, with investigators aiming to identify his last contacts and any scheduled meetings prior to his death.
Police have also begun collecting footage from nearby security cameras to trace who entered or exited the building around the time of the incident. Simultaneously, officers are taking statements from neighbours, hoping someone may have seen a suspicious individual entering the office — or heard shouting or unusual noises.
While the exact time and precise cause of death remain undetermined, preliminary estimates suggest Georgiou died no later than the early hours of 22 July.
