Newsit.gr has obtained new surveillance footage related to the murder of prominent criminal lawyer Stavros Georgiou. A 28-year-old man, who has confessed to the crime, was arrested late Tuesday night (22.07.2026) in the Agios Nikolaos area of Athens. The suspect, originally from Egypt, was transferred this afternoon from temporary custody at the General Directorate of Police (GADA) to the Evripidou detention facility. He has been granted a deadline to appear for formal questioning on Monday.
Confession and Timeline
The suspect admitted to killing Georgiou inside the lawyer’s office in central Athens, located on 3rd September Street. According to his statement to investigators, he struck the 73-year-old lawyer fatally during an argument that escalated inside the premises.
New Video Evidence
The newly released footage captures the suspect walking calmly along the sidewalk moments after leaving Georgiou’s office — laptop in one hand, speaking on his mobile phone with the other. Investigators noted his composed demeanor despite the gravity of what had just occurred.
Following the attack, the suspect reportedly went to a hospital with a fractured hand — an injury allegedly sustained from the force of the blows delivered to the victim.
Discovery of the Body
Georgiou’s body was discovered by his 16-year-old twin daughters late Tuesday evening (21.07.2026). He was found naked and in fetal position inside his office — a space he also used as his primary residence.
Prior Surveillance Footage
Earlier, newsit.gr published another video recorded just 300 meters from the office, showing Georgiou arriving in a black SUV early Tuesday morning — hours before the murder. A second person is visible in the front passenger seat, though it remains unclear whether this individual was the 28-year-old suspect. The vehicle remained parked at the same spot even after the crime.
Motive and Sequence of Events
According to the suspect’s account, he and Georgiou had been socializing earlier that evening at a local bar. Georgiou offered him a ride home, and they left together. En route, they stopped at the lawyer’s office — entering together. It was there, the suspect claims, that their conversation turned hostile, culminating in the fatal assault.
