State Department: Taliban do not keep promise on Afghan access to Kabul airport

“We have seen reports that the Taliban, contrary to their public statements and commitments to our government, are obstructing Afghans who want to leave the country and go to Kabul airport,” said Wendy Sherman.

She reiterated that the United States no longer considers Ashraf Ghani a player in Afghanistan’s political scene after the former president, who fled the country amid the Taliban occupation of Kabul, said he was “in talks to return.”

“He is no longer a person who counts in Afghanistan,” Sherman said, declining to comment on the UAE decision to grant him asylum.
