In a presentation today (May 14, 2025) at the AI & Tech Summit 2025 in Brussels, organized by Politico, the Chairman and CEO of the Group, announced a strategic investment plan worth €5.75 billion. The investments will focus on green energy infrastructure and next-generation mega data centers in former lignite mining areas in Greece. During an interview with Politico, the head of DEH outlined a strategic plan to transform Western Macedonia from a region historically reliant on lignite into a hub for clean energy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This transformation aims to serve as a model for industrial transition across the European Union. ‘As we observe the massive transformation underway in the digital world, we see an ever-growing interdependence between the digital and energy worlds,’ stated Mr. Stassis. He added that the evolution of AI, which requires significantly more energy production on a large scale, is an issue that public utility companies must address. The €5.75 billion investment plan includes over 3,000 MW of installed renewable energy capacity, new modern conventional and alternative generation units, and 860 MW of storage. This green energy will not only meet national needs but also power one of Greece’s largest data centers and one of Europe’s biggest facilities located in the region. DEH plans to contribute to the development of AI in Europe by building a new 300 MW (expandable up to 1,000 MW) mega data center at the AHE Agiou Dimitriou site, powered behind the meter without burdening the national energy grid. According to the DEH leader, former lignite regions are ideal locations for constructing data centers due to their availability of industrial land, strong energy infrastructure, abundant water resources, experienced workforce, and high-voltage connections. These installations can become critical infrastructure supporting AI, cloud computing, and advanced analytics services while creating jobs and boosting regional prosperity.
