At least five people have lost their lives due to the widespread power outage that hit the Iberian Peninsula yesterday (April 28, 2025). In Tamboandela, in the province of Ourense, Spain, three members of a family died from carbon monoxide poisoning, likely caused by a generator during the blackout. The victims were an elderly couple and their son, who were found dead Tuesday morning. In Alzira, Valencia, a 46-year-old woman died when her oxygen supply was cut off due to the power failure. In Madrid, another woman died in a fire likely caused by a candle. Police who responded to the apartment of the woman, who suffered from a lung condition, attempted CPR for about 29 minutes until paramedics arrived, as reported by El Pais. On Monday evening, in the Carabanchel neighborhood south of Madrid, a fire broke out in the home of a 56-year-old woman. The police are investigating the cause, with initial findings suggesting a candle as the source. At least 13 neighbors required first aid, and five were hospitalized.
