Concern is growing in Spain after a new case of hantavirus was confirmed among passengers of the cruise ship MV Hondius, currently under quarantine in Madrid. A male passenger—who had disembarked earlier this month alongside other travelers—tested positive for the virus while already in isolation. He is now hospitalized in a dedicated isolation unit at Gómez Ulla Hospital.
Second Confirmed Case Among Spanish Passengers
This marks the second confirmed hantavirus case among the 14 Spanish nationals who disembarked from the luxury vessel in Tenerife. The MV Hondius carried approximately 150 passengers and crew members from 23 countries when, on May 2, the World Health Organization was notified of a severe pulmonary illness aboard the ship.
Authorities Monitoring Situation Closely
According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, the patient was transferred immediately to the specialized isolation unit upon confirmation of infection. Health authorities are closely monitoring all individuals who were onboard and continue conducting tests and surveillance.
Despite rising concern, Spanish health officials remain reassuring, stressing that there is no heightened risk to the general public. They emphasize that the case was detected in a person already under quarantine and that all necessary protective measures were promptly implemented.
