Where Geluk once stood — a beloved local landmark for years — a fresh gastronomic venture has taken root: Son Athens. Nestled in Ilioupoli, this new spot reimagines the everyday dining experience, blending coffee culture, brunch, Latin-inspired cuisine, and an expansive wine list of over 70 labels.

A Day-Long Destination

The day at Son Athens begins early with a microbakery ethos — highlighting house-made breads, pastries, and artisanal baking expertise. Rather than a conventional brunch café, it evokes the vibe of a modern urban bakery-café, rooted in craftsmanship and freshness.

As the day unfolds, the rhythm shifts seamlessly: from morning coffee to shared plates inspired by Latin American and Mexican flavors. Chef Dimitris Afentakis — widely recognized for his work at Atole in central Athens — helms the kitchen, crafting a menu that sits comfortably between casual dining and bar food. Expect bold yet balanced combinations: house-made nachos with vibrant guacamole, a beetroot-mango salad with Aegina pistachios and tangy myzithra, or a Black Angus tartare tostada topped with green apple and jalapeño.

The Team Behind the Concept

Son Athens is the product of a seasoned team already influential on Athens’ culinary scene. Co-founder Spyros Argiriou brings experience from acclaimed projects like Mario & Luigi – The Eatalians and Neropistolo Bakery. Wine curator Panos Giannakos — also a co-owner — curated the carefully selected wine list, spotlighting Greek and South American producers alongside notable European choices.

Design and Philosophy

A full interior renovation transformed the space, placing the central bar at the heart of the experience. It’s no longer just a restaurant or café — it’s a dynamic, all-day meeting point, adapting its energy to the time of day. The motto accompanying the menu — “Not born yesterday” — nods both to continuity (honoring the site’s legacy) and to depth of experience: thoughtful curation, skilled execution, and genuine hospitality.

While the offering has grown more gastronomically refined, the spirit remains grounded in coffee passion and musical warmth — core elements still embedded in its DNA.
