Sirens in Jerusalem: Missile Fired from Yemen Intercepted by Israel

in

The Israeli military announced that it intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, after sirens were activated in Jerusalem and central Israel. “Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas of Israel, a missile fired from Yemen was intercepted,” the army stated in a press release. This marks the third interception in three days. Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, which erupted following an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023, Houthi rebels in Yemen have carried out dozens of missile and drone attacks against Israel, declaring their actions as a show of solidarity with the Palestinians. On May 4, a Houthi missile struck the perimeter of Ben Gurion International Airport for the first time, leading most foreign airlines serving Tel Aviv to suspend flights. In response to these attacks, the Israeli military conducted several strikes in recent months against Houthi targets in Yemen, disabling Sanaa’s airport and bombing power stations and cement factories last week. Meanwhile, the U.S., through Omani mediation, agreed to a ceasefire with the Houthis, ending weeks of American airstrikes in retaliation for missile attacks and assaults on ships off Yemen’s coast.
