Sirens in Israel After Missile Launch from Yemen

The Israeli military announced that it intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, which triggered sirens in central regions of the country. “After sirens sounded a while ago in several areas of Israel, a missile fired from Yemen was intercepted,” the military stated in a release. Several explosions were heard over Jerusalem’s skies. This announcement comes two days after the Israeli army declared it had intercepted another missile and projectile launched from Yemen. The Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for these attacks. The Houthis have repeatedly fired missiles and drones at Israel since the war erupted in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel that day. Yemeni rebels, who say they act in solidarity with Palestinians, paused their attacks during the two-month ceasefire in Gaza, which ended in March. However, they resumed assaults when the Israeli army restarted military operations on Palestinian territories. Although most projectiles were intercepted, a Houthi missile in early May reached the perimeter of Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv for the first time. Israel has carried out several strikes in Yemen, mainly targeting ports and the airport in the capital Sanaa, as retaliation for the Houthi attacks.
