She had been thought of many times by the singer in order to escape her marriage to Sonny. Bono, as she mentions in her memoirs. Cher felt such exhaustion and lack of love during her marriage to Sonny Bono, who thought of suicide and in particular to jump off a hotel balcony to escape him. In the book “Cher: The Memoir, Part One” , singer and actress Ser recalls how Sonny controlled every aspect of her life at the height of their fame with the show “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour”, aired on CBS from 1971 to 1974. “I was dizzy by loneliness,” writes the 78-year-old star today in her new memoirs for a 1972 night, when she thought to end her life. “I saw how easy it would be to fall off the edge and just disappear”. In fact, he thought of it “five or six times”. Cher writes that Sonny was so jealous that he wouldn’t let her wear any perfume or even go to parties, and she also handled every part of their career and finances to the point that, despite being a huge star with a successful television show and songs that broke the charts like “I Got You Babe”, she didn’t even have her own bank account. In October 1972, the couple – who were the parents of a young child – filmed two episodes of the show and then flew to Las Vegas where he would give two concerts every night at the Sahara Hotel. The legendary pop star, who had come to weigh 44 pounds, wanted to ask Sonny if she could go with their band to listen to live music, “although he never listened to new music and wouldn’t let me play her at home,” she writes. The 26-year-old Sir then walked in as Sonny had a business meeting and heard him “discussing how much money we had made, so I said: “Well, let’s go to Europe”. Sonny looked down at me and said, ‘ Why? You can’t make money in Europe.” When she said she intended to take a vacation, her husband “turned his look and said, “Sir, come on.” He then told her that he had signed a new contract “to appear in Las Vegas every summer for one God knows how many years …”. “Winned” by the idea of how all these live appearances haunted her and their child, Sir writes that she came out “crazy on our suite balcony and I looked down…”. “For a few minutes I couldn’t imagine any other choice. I did this five or six times and every time I thought of her [child] Chaz, my mother, my sister, everyone and how such things can make people who admire me feel that it is a sustainable situation and I came back inside.” After repeating this act, one night between appearances, he thought: “I don’t have to jump, I can just leave him”. Even then, Sonny controlled her life, as the two of them made an agreement that she would live with him on weekdays, continue working with him and have weekends for herself at their beach house in Malibu. Despite earning her own money, she was allowed a $5,000 a month allowance. “I didn’t care about any of this. I was free and had my own bedroom,” says Cher. The two eventually divorced in 1975 and she continued to marry Gregg Allman that same year. They divorced four years later due to his drug addiction. Information from Page Six
