Shoulder pain: With what form of cancer is associated

The shoulder pain is in the majority of cases a result of inflammation or muscle injury…
However, in some, admittedly few, cases, it may be an indication of cancer.
Any pain in the body cannot be attributed to an obvious cause, such as a fall or a car accident, you will need to be evaluated by a doctor.
It has been observed that the shoulder pain is one of the unusual symptoms of lung cancer. In this case, the pain is considered to be “reflective”. As a reflective or referring to is the pain that stems from a specific point of the body (e.x. lung, pancreas) but is felt in another (shoulder, waist, respectively).
Some types of lung cancer more closely associated with the reflective shoulder pain.
– Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer of the lung that is usually caused by long-term exposure to asbestos. The symptoms are similar to those of other types of lung cancer, however study of 2015 indicated that 14% of patients with mesothelioma had also pain in the shoulder. In fact, in these patients, the shoulder pain was often the first symptom experienced.
– Volume of the summit of the lung (tumor of Pancoast)
The volumes of the summit of the lung is quite rare and detected in the superior thoracic sulcus, the upper part of the lung. Because the superior thoracic sulcus is located close enough to the shoulder, it is likely that a cancerous tumor to trigger pain on the affected side of the body. Patients with a tumor of the apex of the lung exhibiting is often a set of symptoms known as a syndrome of Horner. Syndrome Horner is characterized, inter alia, from changes in the eyes (e.x. eyelid drooping, contraction of the pupil of the eye) and asymmetric sweating (e.x. reduced sweating on one side of the face).
– Metastatic lung cancer
Metastatic or secondary is called the cancer that starts in the lung and spreads to other parts of the body. When cancer cells spread to nearby areas around the lung (e.x. bones, lymph nodes) is likely to manifest pain in the shoulder. The metastatic cancer is accompanied by a wide range of symptoms depending on the organ or system it affects. For example, a metastasis in the liver may manifest with jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
The pain in the shoulder caused by a tumor in the lung has distinct features. However, in the context of the study in patients with mesothelioma has been observed that the pain was quite mild (an average of 4 on a 1-10 scale). In only a few patients noted more severe complications, such as reduced mobility. Also, in some patients with shoulder pain due to cancer of the lung discomfort are felt, and along the hand, up the palm, and include numbness and tingling.
