Shocking F-15 Pilot Testimony: Iranian Drones Attacked in ‘Jellyfish’ Formation

An American F-15 pilot described a harrowing experience after being shot down over Iran — recounting how Iranian drones attacked his aircraft in a coordinated, swarm-like formation he likened to a ‘jellyfish.’ According to CNN, the pilot was rescued by U.S. special operations forces in April following the crash. His detailed account — previously unreported — has sparked intense debate within the U.S. intelligence community, with no consensus yet reached on its interpretation.

‘A Jellyfish in the Sky’

One source familiar with the pilot’s testimony told CNN that multiple drones appeared interconnected and moved as a single unit — with smaller drones positioned beneath larger ones, like ‘tentacles’ or ‘legs.’ The description was so unusual it prompted the source to call it ‘truly alien.’ Another source said the pilot referred to the aerial threat as a ‘minefield of drones.’

The Downing and Rescue

The exact cause of the F-15’s downing remains under investigation. However, two sources told CNN that the drone formation may have played a key role — potentially enabling Iran to overwhelm or outmaneuver the U.S. fighter jet.

The F-15 carried a two-person crew: a pilot and a weapons systems officer. After ejecting, the pilot was recovered hours later. The weapons systems officer evaded capture in mountainous terrain for more than a day before also being rescued.

It is unclear whether the weapons systems officer witnessed the same drone formation. A second U.S. aircraft — an A-10 — was also shot down during the rescue operation. Its pilot safely ejected outside Iranian airspace.

Questions and Uncertainties

U.S. intelligence officials remain divided over how to interpret the pilot’s account — particularly whether his description reflects real technological capability or the fragmented perception of someone suffering from concussion and combat stress. He sustained a traumatic brain injury during the crash and had previously been involved in a friendly-fire incident early in the conflict, when his aircraft was mistakenly targeted by Kuwaiti forces.

The downing marked the first time a U.S. fighter jet was shot down over Iran during the ongoing conflict.
