It only took 16 minutes for the Bayesian yacht, in her Palermo, dragging seven people to the bottom traveling with it, among them British magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch. The Italian authorities have already launched an investigation into negligent manslaughter for the Bayesian wreck in Sicily in order to find out under what conditions the super-luxe yacht sank within minutes. The British flag Bayesian, a super yacht 56 metres long, carried 22 people when it was overturned and sunk within minutes after being hit by a storm before dawn, while anchored off northern Sicily. Fifteen people survived, including Lynch’s wife, to whose company Bayesian belonged. Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was among the dead. His inspiration was paralyzed. The boat was ordered by Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma, but in 2005 he was paralyzed in a sailing boat accident. Thus Bayesian was sold after its completion to Dutch property contractor John Groenewoud and was named Salte. Since then the vessel has been registered in the United Kingdom, with a port of registration in London, and since 2022 it has been managed by Camper & Nicholsons International, based in Geneva. The Bayesian name is inspired by Baysian Conclusionology, which was used in statistical learning engineering by Lynch’s HP Autonomy company. They’re investigating a homicide on the Bayesian captain. In the microscope of the Italian prosecutorial authorities has entered the captain of the super-luxury yacht Bayesian, Italian media Reuters reported on Monday (26.08.2024). James Catfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander, is being investigated for manslaughter by negligence and shipwreck, reports the newspapers “La Repubblica” and “Corriere della Sera”. Prosecutors may also investigate a crew member who was on duty when the storm struck and survived. Catfield and his eight surviving crew members have not yet made any comment. “The Bayesian was built to go out to sea at any time,” said Franco Romani, a shipbuilding architect who participated in the group that designed it in La Stampa in an interview with him.
