Hospital principal, Dr. Owen Menach, confirmed that Ceptegay died Wednesday night (04.05.2024), with the athlete succumbing to her injuries. “Unfortunately, we lost her after all her instruments collapsed last night”, Menah said, according to the Kenyan newspaper “The Star”. “With deep sadness we announce the death of our athlete, Rebecca Chepteghi early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. May her soul rest In Peace. — UGANDA ATHLETICS FEDERATIONUAF (@UgaAthletics2) The gasoline attack by her partner According to a police report the Kenyan athlete’s companion, Dickson Diema Marangah, entered her home in the city of Embempes, Trans County, on Sunday (01.09.2024) around 14:00 (time local), while the athlete and her children were in the church. When they returned, Dickson “put gasoline on Rebecca before setting the fire”, notes in detail the report, which adds that the man was also burned by the flames. The 33-year-old athlete, who was saved by neighbors, and her partner was initially treated with “multiple burns” in the nearest hospital, in the town of Kitale, before being transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldorette, a large city in the Rift Valley. “At the point of the tragedy a 5-litre box, a bag and a black hat allegedly belonged to Dickson and a burnt cell phone belonging to Rebecca were found”, the police report clarified. Rebecca Chepteggi and Dickson Diema Marangah, were “a couple who had constant family disputes”, according to the police report.
