Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Storms, and 9-Beaufort Winds Hit 9 Regions

An emergency weather bulletin has been issued by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) for Sunday, February 1, 2026. A powerful storm system will bring torrential rain, persistent thunderstorms, hail, snow in mountainous areas, and winds up to 9 Beaufort across most of Greece. Nine regions are under threat: Peloponnese, Thessaly, Macedonia, Crete, Ionian Islands, Epirus, Sterea Ellada, Eastern Aegean Islands, and the Dodecanese. The Peloponnese faces a ‘red alert’ starting early Sunday morning through late afternoon. Similarly, eastern Thessaly and Central Macedonia—including Larissa, Magnesia (including the Sporades), Pieria, Imathia, and Chalkidiki—are under red alert. Orange alerts cover Crete (especially western and southern parts), the Ionian Islands (Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos), Epirus, western Sterea Ellada, western Thessaly (Karditsa, Trikala), remaining parts of Central Macedonia, eastern Sterea Ellada, Evia, and the Eastern Aegean islands. Athens will be at the epicenter of the storm Sunday morning. On Monday, intense conditions shift to the Dodecanese and Crete before gradually easing by evening. Snowfall is expected in high-altitude mainland areas and northern lowland regions—including parts of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace—from early Sunday afternoon.
