Severe Weather Alert: 112 Activated in Achaia, Elis, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Peloponnese, Thessaly & Sporades

A severe weather system is expected to hit much of Greece from Saturday night, January 31, 2026, lasting approximately 48 hours. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast across the Ionian Islands (Achaia, Elis, Zakynthos, Kefalonia), the entire Peloponnese, Thessaly, and the Sporades. The national emergency number 112 issued urgent alerts urging residents to restrict non-essential movements from Saturday evening through Sunday morning (Feb 1) in affected regions. Red alert status has been declared by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection for large parts of Macedonia, Thessaly, and the Peloponnese. Thunderstorms may be locally intense—especially in western and southern mainland areas, Crete, and the Aegean—while snowfall is expected in mountainous and some semi-mountainous areas of northern and eastern Greece, including Thrace. Winds will reach up to 8 Beaufort over seas; temperatures will drop significantly, with lows near freezing in northern and central inland regions.
