Extremely wintry conditions are expected starting from Tuesday (March 18, 2025), with a sharp drop in temperatures, heavy rains, thunderstorms, and snowfall in mountainous, semi-mountainous areas, and even some low-altitude regions in the eastern mainland. The weather, influenced by a cold front affecting the country today, will be accompanied by stormy winds reaching Beaufort scale 8 and locally up to 9 over the Aegean Sea and eastern mainland from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday evening. According to Theocharis Kollias, director of the National Meteorological Service (EMY), temperatures will return to normal levels over the weekend. The sudden ‘plummet’ in temperature is caused by the movement of cold air masses moving southward across the country. In Athens, the abrupt temperature drop will be followed by a slow but steady rise. Forecasts indicate that the coldest day will be Wednesday, with temperatures not exceeding 9-11°C in Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Eastern Sterea, Central and Northern Aegean, and 13-15°C elsewhere. Heavy rains and snowfall in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas are expected on Tuesday and early Wednesday. Strong northerly winds will intensify over the Aegean on Wednesday, reaching up to Beaufort scale 7-8. The EMY’s Special Weather Warning predicts severe weather conditions for Tuesday and Wednesday, with noticeable temperature drops (up to 12-15 degrees), strong rains, thunderstorms, and snowfall in mountainous, semi-mountainous areas, and even some low-altitude regions in the eastern mainland.
