The trial opened in Serres for the fatal beating and murder of 17-year-old Angelos, a violent incident that occurred in January and continues to shock the northern Greek city. On Wednesday, 24 June 2026, proceedings began before the Three-Member Juvenile Court. In the defendant’s dock sits a 16-year-old — who was 15 years and two months old at the time — charged with premeditated homicide in a state of calm mental capacity (a felony under Greek law). He had been detained at a juvenile detention facility in Volos.
Postponement Request Denied
The defendant’s defense attorney requested a postponement due to an impediment, but the presiding judge rejected the motion. The judge instructed that legal representation for the teen must be secured by noon — otherwise, the court will appoint counsel.
Public Presence Outside Court
Early on Wednesday, a crowd gathered outside the Serres courthouse in response to a call from Angelos’s family. His brother had urged residents of Serres via social media to stand in solidarity, writing: ‘This is the first trial concerning the murder of our younger brother. The main accused stands before the court — over a girl, he stole our entire world.’
12 Witnesses to Testify
The trial is being held behind closed doors. A total of 12 witnesses are scheduled to testify, including Angelos’s parents and sister; five friends who were with him the night of the attack; the young woman at the center of the dispute — reportedly the defendant’s girlfriend — who allegedly received a message from Angelos that prompted the defendant to seek him out for explanations; two friends of the defendant who accompanied him that night; a friend of the defendant’s brother; and the technical advisor appointed to assist Angelos’s family. Two of the witnesses linked to the 16-year-old are currently in pretrial detention on unrelated drug trafficking charges.
