Serres: Confirmed Case of African Swine Fever – Countrywide Regions on High Alert

A confirmed case of African Swine Fever (ASF) in a pig farm located in the municipality of Amphipolis, Serres has triggered a nationwide alert among pig farmers and veterinary authorities. The incident has raised concerns not only in the regional units of Kavala and Drama but also across several other regions throughout Greece.

Following this development, as reported by infonews24.gr, additional areas have been included in restricted zones beyond the already designated regions such as Evros, Rodopi, Xanthi, Kilkis, Pella, Imathia, Kozani, Florina, Kastoria, Ioannina, Thesprotia, Chalkidiki, and the Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki.

The newly added zones in the regional unit of Kavala include municipal communities like Kavala, Nea Karvali, Zygos, and local communities including Chalkeiou, Amygdaleonas, Korifon, Kryoneri, Palaiokavala, Polystylo, and Filippoi (Municipality of Kavala), Keramoti and Chrysoupoli (Municipality of Nestos), as well as Nea Peramos and surrounding localities in the Municipality of Pangaio.

In addition to previously defined zones in Kilkis, Pella, Kozani, Florina, and Kastoria, new areas in Drama, Kavala, and Serres have also been incorporated into the restricted zone. These include various municipalities and local communities such as Doxato, Drama, Paranesti, Prosotsani, and others.

The regional unit of Serres now includes local communities like Ligaria and Sesiama (Municipality of Visoko), Neos Souli, Chrysou, Neos Skopos, and numerous others under the Municipality of Emmanuel Papas, as well as parts of Irakleia, Nea Zichni, and Sintiki municipalities.

Authorities are urging strict adherence to biosecurity measures and guidelines outlined in relevant circulars to prevent further spread of the disease. Veterinary services across all regional units have been alerted to ensure rigorous implementation of preventive protocols.
