Serres: 55-Year-Old Jailed for Allegedly Attempting to Burn His Estranged Wife Alive

A 55-year-old man was taken into custody after confessing during questioning by authorities in Serres, Greece. He is accused of dousing his estranged wife with gasoline inside their home and attempting to set her on fire. The man faces charges of attempted murder and arson, which he denied during a lengthy interrogation before being sent to jail. Despite his claims that he never intended to harm the 37-year-old woman or destroy their only property, reports suggest he admitted regret over his actions. He allegedly justified his behavior by stating he wanted to scare her into agreeing to a divorce. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning (05.03.2025) in a Serres neighborhood after an emergency call from the suspect’s mother-in-law, who lives in the same house. Police seized numerous weapons and small amounts of cannabis from the residence, including hunting rifles, air guns, knives, bows with arrows, electronic cigarettes, and a metal cannabis grinder. Additional charges were filed against the 55-year-old related to illegal possession of weapons and narcotics.
