Seismologist Tselenis Discusses Inactive Faults in Heraklion and Rising Terrain

Seismologist Akis Tselenis has addressed the issue of faults in the village of Boutes near Heraklion, Crete, emphasizing that the region is experiencing a gradual uplift. In a recent post, Tselenis explained the findings from a detailed geological study conducted over the past three years. The study revealed numerous inactive faults with north-south orientations in the wider Boutes area. These faults were identified using electrical, seismic, satellite, and georadar methods. Tselenis noted that these findings were not publicized to avoid unnecessary panic among residents. Additionally, he highlighted that the broader Boutes region is slowly rising while the harbor area is subsiding. He cautioned against jumping to conclusions regarding land subsidence without further data. Furthermore, Tselenis dismissed as ‘nonsense’ any claims linking these faults to volcanic activity in Santorini or groundwater extraction.
