Reports are mounting about secret negotiations between the US and Russia to restart the ‘frozen’ Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was halted due to the war in Ukraine. According to Germany’s Bild, bilateral talks are ongoing in Switzerland. At the heart of these secret discussions between the US and Russia, which have been taking place for weeks in Switzerland as reported by Bild, is the reactivation of the natural gas pipelines. The aim seems to be to soon resume the flow of Russian gas to Germany through the heavily damaged Nord Stream 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea. As Bild reports, it is rumored that the two powers are set to sign a supply agreement where the US, acting as an intermediary, would channel Russian gas through Nord Stream 2 to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). This way, the US would control the flow of German gas and also reap profits, according to the newspaper. These secret negotiations are reportedly happening in Steinhausen, Switzerland, where the offices of the pipeline management companies are located. Former US ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, is said to be involved in the Steinhausen talks. Additionally, Matthias Warnig, former managing director of Nord Stream 2, ex-spy for East Germany’s Stasi, and key figure at the controversial ‘Institute for Climate Protection’ in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is also participating, according to Financial Times. A critical deadline, as per Bild, is May 9th, when the relevant Swiss bankruptcy court has given Nord Stream 2 AG until then to prevent a forced sale of the pipelines.
