Scottish fans have been stranded in Greece after a fire broke out at an electrical substation at London’s Heathrow Airport on Friday (21/3/25). Following the Greece vs Scotland match (where Scotland won 1-0) on Thursday night (20/3/25) for the Nations League playoffs, British fans faced a massive issue. Due to the fire, Scottish supporters were unable to return to England. A BBC correspondent described the immense distress of those who came to watch the game and had to change flights, praising the staff at Athens International Airport. He stated: ‘I was among the Scottish fans who watched the game against Greece just hours ago and got up before sunrise for the flight to Heathrow. We had passed through passport control and security checks on time and while waiting in line for breakfast, an airport staff member announced: “All flights to Heathrow are canceled.” A glance at the departures board confirmed it. When we asked why, we were told that all flights to Heathrow today would be canceled due to the fire. We then scrambled with about 50 other passengers and returned through passport control to re-enter Greece.’ He added: ‘Many passengers around us planned to take alternative flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Aberdeen. They were searching for last-minute bookings via other European cities, at unknown costs. This gives an idea of the impact on travelers’ plans. The staff in Athens were very helpful, providing vouchers and clear instructions. Systems are being updated, so for now – like many others – we wait. Heathrow is not only Europe’s largest airport but also one of the five busiest globally.’
