The cause of death for acclaimed New Zealand actor Sam Neill remains unknown. The 78-year-old star — best known for his roles in Jurassic Park and The Piano — passed away suddenly on Monday, 13 July 2026, at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney, Australia.

A Sudden and Unexpected Loss

In an official statement posted to Neill’s Instagram account, his family described his passing as “sudden and unexpected.” They confirmed he was surrounded by loved ones and died with the dignity that defined his life.

“With profound sadness, the family of Sam Neill announces his death on Monday, 13 July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by his family and passed away with the grace and dignity that characterised his entire life,” the statement read.

It added: “His loss was sudden and unexpected; however, it is a comfort that Sam remained in remission from cancer. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their exceptional care. Further details will be shared in due course. For now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”

Cancer Remission and Recent Health Updates

Nearly three months before his death, Neill had publicly announced he was in remission from non-Hodgkin lymphoma — a blood cancer he had been living with for about five years. In April 2026, he told Australia’s Channel Seven News that chemotherapy had stopped working, but a groundbreaking gene therapy — which modified his immune system — had successfully sent the disease into remission.

His family’s announcement confirmed he “remained in remission” at the time of his hospitalisation.

A Distinguished Career and Legacy

Niel’s cinematic career spanned over five decades, beginning in the 1970s with the New Zealand thriller Sleeping Dogs. He rose to international fame with iconic roles in films including The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, and Dead Calm, and most recently appeared in Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) and the hit series Peaky Blinders.

He also made memorable appearances in television shows such as The Tudors, Alcatraz, and even voiced himself on The Simpsons. Born in Omagh, Northern Ireland, to an English mother and a New Zealand father, Neill later settled in New Zealand, where he owned vineyards in Central Otago on the South Island.

In 2022, he was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit — a prestigious honour recognising his contributions to film and culture.
