Salmonella Outbreak in Lamia Easing

Salmonella Outbreak in Lamia Easing, Checks Continue

—

in

Authorities report that the recent cluster of salmonella cases in Lamia appears to be entering a de-escalation phase—though intensive inspections continue across the entire food supply chain linked to the suspected supplier. The outbreak, which prompted dozens of residents to seek treatment at Lamia General Hospital for acute gastroenteritis, triggered an urgent public health response.

Investigation Underway

The investigation began after multiple patients presented with similar symptoms, prompting health officials to search for a common contamination source. According to official data from the Region of Central Greece, 22 confirmed salmonella cases have been recorded so far. Twelve patients remain hospitalized in the Internal Medicine Department and the Short-Stay Unit of Lamia General Hospital—but their clinical condition is stable, and most are expected to be discharged by Wednesday, 15 July. The majority are under 30 years old.

Coordinated Response

A coordination meeting was held involving key regional officials: Deputy Regional Governor for Health Andreas Toulis; Deputy Regional Governor for Fthiotida Prefecture Elias Sanidas; and Deputy Regional Governor for Agricultural Economy, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Konstantinos Apostolopoulos—alongside technical staff from relevant departments.

Lamia General Hospital successfully identified the salmonella strain in laboratory tests and immediately notified the competent authorities. The Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY) is maintaining continuous communication with the Directorate of Public Health and Social Welfare of Fthiotida, while joint inspection teams are conducting extensive checks at six different food service establishments in Lamia.

Epidemiological analysis so far indicates that affected individuals are not connected to each other and did not attend any shared meal. However, all had visited one of those six venues. As part of full traceability efforts, food handlers from the implicated establishments—and personnel involved in the suspect supplier’s supply chain—have undergone microbiological testing. Results are pending.

Meanwhile, veterinary and health inspectors are intensifying controls across the entire supply chain of the supplier currently under investigation. Ongoing coordination also includes the hospital’s administration, though the announcement cuts off before detailing further actions.
