The Russian captain of the cargo ship ‘Solong’, Vladimir Motin, has been charged with manslaughter by gross negligence following a collision with the American tanker ‘Stena Immaculate’ in the North Sea. The incident occurred on March 11th, approximately 12 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire, resulting in the death of an unidentified sailor.
British police announced that Motin, aged 59 and hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia, was arrested after being deemed responsible for the crash. The collision caused significant damage to both vessels, with the tanker suffering a fire and loss of power. Efforts are underway to tow the damaged ships.
Motin is scheduled to appear in court in Hull on Saturday, March 15th, according to the Humber Police statement. This maritime accident highlights ongoing concerns about safety protocols and potential oversights in international shipping routes.
