Following a phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine, Russia stated today (04.07.2025) that the invasion was inevitable and cannot currently be resolved through diplomatic means. The Kremlin assessed today that it is ‘not possible’ for Russia to achieve its goals in Ukraine via diplomacy at this stage.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov added that they closely monitor all statements made by the U.S. president, referring to Donald Trump’s ‘disappointment’ over Moscow’s stance on continuing the war. Specifically, Trump—who last week emphatically claimed that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, ‘seeks to settle’ the war in Ukraine—highlighted on Thursday (03.07.2025), after another phone conversation, that the situation remains unresolved.
When asked about this, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded: ‘Of course, we pay close attention to all of President Trump’s statements.’ However, he did not comment further on the U.S. president’s criticisms.
Additionally, Peskov emphasized that Putin told Trump that Moscow would prefer to achieve its goals in Ukraine politically and diplomatically but will continue its ‘special military operation’ in the interim. ‘We would prefer to do this diplomatically. But as long as this does not seem feasible, we will continue the special military operation,’ he stressed.
Finally, the Kremlin spokesperson stated that the Russian president told his American counterpart that Moscow is expected to agree to a third round of peace talks with Kyiv, following the first two rounds in May and June.
