Russia reaffirmed today (May 6, 2025) its commitment to implementing the temporary ceasefire announced in honor of the “Victory Day” celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II. Specifically, on April 28, 2025, Vladimir Putin announced that Russian forces would enforce a ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to May 10. During this period, on the last day of the ceasefire, President Putin will host international leaders at Moscow’s Red Square, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed today (May 6, 2025) that the three-day ceasefire would apply in Ukraine, although Kyiv has not officially stated whether it will reciprocate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appears to reject such a brief pause, stating he is prepared to sign a ceasefire lasting at least 30 days, an idea that Putin said requires significant work before becoming reality. When asked what Moscow would do if Zelenskyy did not agree to the three-day ceasefire, Peskov replied: “The initiative for a temporary ceasefire during public holidays stands, and relevant instructions have been given to the armed forces.” He added that while there will be a ceasefire, if Kyiv does not reciprocate and continues attacking Russian positions, there will be an immediate response. Peskov noted that Kyiv has shown no indication of agreeing to the proposed ceasefire. Additionally, the Kremlin representative emphasized that Russia prioritizes national interests over oil prices, despite their critical role in the Russian economy. Efforts continue with the U.S. regarding the war in Ukraine, and discussions took place between Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pезжикian regarding progress in Iran-U.S. negotiations. Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to facilitate dialogue for a fair agreement.
