Russia stopped gas exports to Europe via Ukraine

The energy company Gazprom announced today (1.1.2025) that it stopped exports to Europe via Ukraine from 08:00 (Moscow time, 07:00 Greek time) as the transit agreement expired. The closure of the oldest route of Russian gas to Europe puts an end to a decade of tense relations after the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014. Russia continues to export gas through the TurkStream pipeline located at the bottom of the Black Sea. CORVERSE The European Union doubled its efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian energy after the outbreak of the military conflict in Ukraine in 2022 seeking alternative sources. The validity of the five-year gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine expired in the early hours of 1 January 2025 and Kiev has repeatedly stated that it will not extend the agreement as long as the war lasts. ‘Due to the repeated and clearly expressed refusal of the Ukrainian side to renew these agreements, Gazprom has not been able to supply gas for transit through the territory of Ukraine since 1 January 2025,’ says Gazprom in a statement made public through Telegram. “From 8:00 Moscow time, Russian gas supply for transport through Ukraine’s territory does not take place”.
