The fact that Donald Trump left open the possibility of obtaining Greenland even by military means, could not leave Russia indifferent, which by the mouth of Dmitry Peskov responded in a categorical way to Moscow’s attitude on the matter. CORVERSE In particular, the Kremlin representative said today (09.01.2020) that Russia has the largest coastline in the Arctic and is closely monitoring the “dramatic development” of the situation. “ The Arctic is an area of our national interests, our strategic interests and we are interested in maintaining the atmosphere of peace and stability in the Arctic region, ” said Dmitry Peskov. Moscow’s attitude “We are watching very closely the very dramatic development of the situation, but for the time being, thank God, at the level of statements,” added a leading Russian official. Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Salts, expressed surprise at Trump’s comments on Greenland and Canada and noted that the European partners agree that the inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law. Asked about Trump’s comments on the Panama Canal, which the US built before delivering to Panama in 1999, the Kremlin replied that it heard them, but that it is a matter of the US and Panama. What the US embassy said in Denmark earlier today, the US embassy in Copenhagen said the US currently has no plans to increase their military presence in Greenland. “There are no plans to increase this military footprint in Greenland. We will continue to work closely with Copenhagen and Nuk (S.T.S.: the capital of Greenland) to ensure that any proposals meet our common security needs,” the embassy representative told Reuters. Greenland is crucial to the U.S. military and the early warning system of ballistic missiles as the shortest route from Europe to North America passes through the island.
