Russia: Izvestia Journalist Dead After Dropping Drone in Ukraine · Global Voices

Alexander Martemianov, an independent journalist working for the Izvestia newspaper, was returning from Horivka, a city in the district of Donetsk, Ukraine that is under Russia’s control. Martemianov was along with his colleagues, in a car, which was bombed by Ukrainian drone, as broadcast by the Russian state news agency RIA. CORVERSE A RIA journalist and four other media workers were injured in the attack, added the news agency. “The car in which the journalist was on board was attacked by a suicide drone. Martemianov succumbed to his injuries,” wrote Izvestia. “The Ukrainian army launched a drone attack against a civilian car in which Izvestia’s independent correspondent, Alexander Martemianov, was on board,” writes the newspaper on its Telegram channel. “The car was located far from the contact line”, completed in the statement. CORVERSE According to Izvestia, the car was moving on a highway connecting Donetsk, the main city of the district of Donetsk which is under Russian control and the city of Horivka to the north. Another Izvestia war correspondent, Semion Eremin, was killed by a Ukrainian drone in August 2024 in the Zaporizia region in southern Ukraine, the newspaper clarified. According to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) based in New York City, at least 15 journalists were killed while covering the conflict in Ukraine since February 2022. This organisation states that it is currently investigating other deaths of journalists.
