Ukrainian drones caused disruptions to flights in and out of Moscow today (May 21, 2025), according to the mayor of the Russian capital. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin repeatedly reported via posts on Telegram about attacks from hostile drones targeting Moscow, all of which were reportedly shot down by Russia’s anti-aircraft defense system. At least 15 drones were intercepted by Thursday evening, as stated by Sobyanin. For safety reasons, the Russian civil aviation authority was forced to intermittently suspend flights to and from Moscow’s airports. Consequently, operations at Russia’s largest airport, Sheremetyevo, as well as Domodedovo and Zhukovsky, were affected. Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 recorded numerous flight diversions destined for Moscow today.
