This expansion from Russia is nearly seven times more than 2023 (584 quadricycle km) in Ukraine, according to analysis from the French Agency of data from the American institute for the study of war (ISW), by December 30. Russia now controls or attempts at 70% of the region, compared with 59% at the end of 2023. The Russian advance accelerated there from August 2024, the month in which the Russians occupied nearly 400 sq km, to reach 629 sq km in November. In 2024 it was also marked by the large-scale Ukrainian attack on the Russian Kursk district launched in July.
