Shocking footage has emerged from a Ukrainian drone strike on an oil refinery in Moscow, carried out in the early hours of Thursday, June 18, 2026. The attack sent plumes of burning oil spraying across nearby vehicles and buildings—so much so that residents reported an ‘oil rain’ falling across parts of southern Moscow and its suburbs.

Unprecedented Scale of Attack

Russian authorities say nearly 200 Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district—Moscow’s largest refinery and a critical energy infrastructure site located in the city’s southeastern outskirts. The assault caught Moscow off guard and underscored Kyiv’s growing ability to strike deep inside Russian territory.

Air Defense Claims Diverge

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that air defense systems shot down at least 194 drones during the morning raid—the third consecutive day of Ukrainian aerial attacks on the capital. Russia’s Ministry of Defense, however, claimed it intercepted 555 drones—a significant discrepancy that highlights ongoing challenges in verifying battlefield reports.

Apocalyptic Scenes and Widespread Damage

Videos circulating online show massive flames and thick black smoke rising over southern Moscow—among the most dramatic visuals yet from the war. One widely shared clip captures the lid of a large oil storage tank being hurled hundreds of meters into the air following a powerful explosion. Other footage shows fires breaking out across multiple points within the refinery complex.

According to local officials, at least 16 people were injured—including two children. Several drones also struck residential apartment buildings in southern Moscow and surrounding areas. Two of the capital region’s largest shopping malls were reportedly damaged as well.

Recurring Target

The Kapotnya refinery had already been hit by Ukrainian drones on Tuesday—and again roughly a month earlier—suggesting it remains a high-priority target for Kyiv’s long-range operations. The repeated strikes point to evolving Ukrainian capabilities in drone warfare, logistics, and precision targeting.

The attack also disrupted air travel: all four of Moscow’s major airports temporarily suspended operations amid heightened alert levels.
