Russia Condemns Trump’s Threats of Military Strikes Against Iran – Global Catastrophe Risk

The threats issued by President Trump on Sunday (April 1, 2025) against Iran regarding bombings and new sanctions have alarmed Russia, which responded today (April 3, 2025) to the aggressive rhetoric. Specifically, Russia described Trump’s threats of military strikes against Iran as ‘unacceptable’ and warned that such attacks could lead to catastrophic consequences if nuclear facilities are bombed. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to questions about Iran’s nuclear program and the current situation, stated that Moscow is committed to finding solutions for Iran’s nuclear program that respect Tehran’s right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. ‘The use of military force by Iran’s adversaries in resolving the issue is illegal and unacceptable,’ said Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ‘Threats to bomb Iran’s nuclear installations will undoubtedly lead to irreversible global catastrophe. These threats are simply unacceptable.’ Western powers accuse Iran of having a secret agenda to develop nuclear weapons through uranium enrichment at levels higher than justified for a civilian energy program. In contrast, Tehran insists its nuclear program is entirely for peaceful energy purposes. Russia and Iran signed a ‘comprehensive agreement on strategic partnership’ in January, although it lacks a mutual defense assistance clause. According to the agreement, if one party is attacked, the other will not assist the aggressor. Russia condemns U.S. threats, stated Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov in the magazine Life.
