So far the US has refused to allow Ukraine to hit targets deep in Russian territory with the weapons they provide it, fearing escalation that could lead to a direct conflict between Moscow and Washington. In September, Putin had warned again that, if the Westerners allow Ukraine to hit Russian territory with greater range of missiles, this would mean that “NATO countries are at war with Russia”.
