U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed today (June 24, 2026) that Washington will not take any action in its negotiations with Iran that would compromise the security of its long-standing allies in the Gulf.

Commitment to Gulf Partners

Speaking to reporters before departing Kuwait for Bahrain—where he will continue a brief regional tour focused on Iran-related diplomacy—Rubio emphasized alignment with Gulf partners. “We will be fully aligned with our partners in the Gulf,” he said.

“That’s why I’m making these trips now—and that’s why I’m here,” he added. “We will not do anything that undermines the security of our allies, our longstanding allies in the region.”

Conditions for an Iran Deal

Rubio reiterated that the United States remains open to a genuine and constructive agreement with Iran—but only if Tehran demonstrates serious intent. “If Iran wants to make a good, real agreement, the United States is open to that. If not, then of course the President [Donald Trump] has options,” he stated.

Next Steps in Negotiations

Technical-level talks between the U.S. and Iran are set to resume by month’s end—most likely on June 29 or 30—in Switzerland, Rubio confirmed.
