Over 300,000 Italians participated in a demonstration led by opposition parties in Rome, demanding an immediate end to the war in Gaza. Protesters chanted slogans and criticized the governments of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu. A massive solidarity mobilization for the Palestinian civilian population was organized this evening (07.06.2025) in Rome by Italy’s three largest opposition parties: the Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, and Italian Left with the ecologists. Trade unions and civil society organizations joined forces, calling for an immediate halt to Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Tens of thousands of people, according to organizers, marched while waving Palestinian, peace, and party flags, as well as anti-war banners. However, several Israeli and peace flags featuring the Star of David were also visible. The march, organized in Rome by opposition forces including Partito Democratico (Democratic Party), Movimento 5 Stelle (M5s), and Alleanza Verdi Sinistra Italiana (Avs), started at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and ended near San Giovanni in Laterano.

The banner leading the massive march read: ‘Stop the massacre in Gaza. Enough with complicity.’ Local authorities reported that at least ten thousand people took to the streets of Rome, with thousands more gathering in the square where the procession concluded.

According to organizers, over 300,000 citizens participated in the march, which ended in Rome’s San Giovanni Square. ‘Giorgia Meloni must heed today’s call and recognize the Palestinian state. The Palestinians are not alone, and their lives matter. Today we say: “Two peoples and two states,”’ emphasized Eli Slai, secretary of the Democratic Party, who noted that ‘ethnic cleansing is underway in Gaza, which is unacceptable.’

This protest was not the only one calling for an end to the war in Gaza. Parties Italia Viva and Azione organized a meeting titled ‘Two peoples, two states, one destiny’ at the Parenti Theater in Milan on Friday. The second protest emerged due to disagreements between centrist parties and the organizers of the Rome march, as Italia Viva and Azione had requested mention of antisemitism in the manifesto, which was rejected by Avs, M5, and Pd.
